Why charity matters for Jacobs Steel: Our 2024 Charity Ball

In 2023, we held our 3rd annual charity ball in aid of West Sussex Mind and Guild Care. Jacobs Steel hosted its first charity ball in October 2019 to celebrate turning 35 years old. It was a huge success, raising over £10,000 for charity. A few failed attempts later (due to covid) and we successfully held our second ball in 2022, raising in excess of £12,000. And finally in 2023, we raised a whopping £17,652.67!
We’re really excited about this year’s event, not only because we aim to crush the fundraising efforts, but we’ll also be celebrating Jacobs Steel’s 40th year of trading! Who’d have thought way back in 1984 that we would be here 40 years later, with 6 offices, 4 departments, over 40 staff, and raising tens of thousands of pounds for such phenomenal local charities!?
Why we hold our charity ball
When Matt Jacobs returned to the UK in 2018 after residing in Australia for a number of years, he returned with a vision. The land down under knows real estate, and they know community. Whilst Worthing wasn’t a stranger to the odd charity gala, local estate agents’ community efforts concentrated on sponsoring golf days and school fayres; and while these will always have their place, Matt felt that there was so much more that could be done. So, with joint Managing Director, Pat Barton, on board, the pair set out to choose which charities the ball would support.
Ill mental health isn’t a trend, despite what TikTok might have you think. Poor mental health has affected the lives of thousands for decades and, in 2024, there are few people who remain untouched by the destruction it can wreak on people’s everyday lives. West Sussex Mind was therefore an obvious choice.
West Sussex Mind is a vital community resource providing essential support to individuals facing mental health challenges. They offer a range of services, from one-to-one counselling and group sessions to training for professionals and awareness campaigns. However, as an independent charity, West Sussex Mind relies heavily on fundraising to maintain and expand its vital work. Donations enable them to provide crucial support, develop new programs, and reach more people in need, making a real difference in the lives of those affected by mental health issues.
But with the long-term relationship Jacobs Steel had forged with Worthing charity, Guild Care, we couldn’t settle on just one charity. Having worked with Guild Care for decades, we already understood the incredible work that they do. Guild Care is a cornerstone of the Worthing community, dedicated to enhancing the lives of those in need. This leading social care charity provides a wide range of services, including care homes, home care, and support for older people and those living with dementia.
As a charity, Guild Care relies heavily on fundraising to sustain its vital services. Donations enable them to invest in cutting-edge care, support staff development, and maintain comfortable and stimulating living spaces, ensuring that their beneficiaries receive the best possible care and support.
